Assam is honestly one of the most beautiful states in Northeast India. It has a bit of everything — the huge Brahmaputra river, green forests everywhere, wildlife, old temples, and a culture that you actually notice when you travel there. It doesn’t feel “put together for tourists”, it feels real.
Most people keep their trip simple. They start from Guwahati, then go to Kaziranga National Park, and then maybe Tezpur. This route works well because everything is connected and you don’t really get confused while travelling. It’s like a smooth first-time Assam experience.
This guide is basically a list of the must visit places in Assam that give you the real experience of the state, not just random stops.
Guwahati – Gateway of Northeast India
Guwahati is where most trips actually begin. It’s the main city, and you kind of feel it as soon as you land or reach the station. Busy, but not overwhelming.
The Brahmaputra is right there beside the city, and in the evening it just slows everything down. People usually just sit there for a while, doing nothing, just watching the river. It has that kind of calm.
They call it the gateway of Northeast India because everything connects from here — airport, trains, highways — so reaching Guwahati is easy from almost any big city in India.
You can fly directly from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, etc. From the airport or station, you’ll easily get cabs outside, no struggle.
Places to visit in Guwahati
Kamakhya Temple (Shakti Peetha)

This is one of the most important temples in India, and also one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It sits on Nilachal Hill.
People come here from everywhere for darshan. During Ambubachi Mela, it gets extremely crowded, but the energy of the place feels different… a bit intense, a bit heavy also, in a way you notice even if you’re not very spiritual.
Umananda Temple

This one is on a small island in the Brahmaputra. Dedicated to Lord Shiva.
You take a small ferry from Kachari Ghat to reach there. It’s a short ride, nothing fancy, but honestly quite peaceful. Once you’re on the river, the city noise just fades out for a bit, and it feels calm in a simple way.
Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra
This is a cultural place where Assamese art, dance, music, and lifestyle are shown. There are small museums and open spaces. It really helps you understand Assam’s culture in a better way, not just reading but seeing it properly.
Assam State Museum
Here you will see old coins, sculptures, scripts, costumes, and other historical items. It is not very big but quite informative if you like history.
Guwahati Ropeway
This is known as the longest river ropeway in India. The ride gives a good top view of the Brahmaputra river. Simple experience but worth it.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (optional)
If you don’t have time to go Kaziranga, this place is nearby. It is smaller but you can still see one-horned rhinoceros here. People often call it “Mini Kaziranga”.
Shopping and food
If you want to do a bit of shopping, Fancy Bazaar and Paltan Bazaar are the main places. It’s the usual busy market scene. You’ll find clothes, small handicrafts, and local things everywhere. Nothing polished or fancy, just proper local market vibes where you keep walking and checking random shops.
Food is also very simple here. Mostly rice with fish curry, and Masor Tenga is something you’ll see a lot. People also eat pitha, which is a local sweet kind of food. It’s not restaurant-style fancy food, but it feels real and home-like.
Most people just stay 1 or 2 days in Guwahati and then move ahead to Kaziranga or other places.
Kaziranga National Park – Wildlife Experience

Kaziranga is honestly one of the most famous places in Assam. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and people know it mainly for the one horned rhinoceros. You don’t really see that kind of wildlife anywhere else in India like this, especially if you’re planning a proper wildlife trip in Assam.
The park is huge, around 430 square km, and it sits on the northern side of the Brahmaputra river. What makes it really special is not just the animals, but how naturally everything is still maintained there. It feels wild, not artificial.
Wildlife in Kaziranga
Main attraction is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Around two-thirds of the world population lives here. Apart from that, you can see elephants, wild buffalo, swamp deer, hog deer, leopards, and Bengal tiger. Tiger density is actually very high here but sightings are rare.
There are also many birds, especially in winter when migratory birds come.
Safari options

Jeep Safari
This is the most common safari. Park is divided into zones:
- Central (Kohora)
- Western (Bagori)
- Eastern (Agoratoli)
- Burapahar
- Western zone is often considered best for sightings.
Elephant Safari
This happens early morning. It gives very close view of rhinos in grasslands. Booking must be done early, especially in peak season.
How to reach
Kaziranga has no airport or railway station. You have to travel by road from Guwahati (around 195 km). It takes 5–6 hours. Jorhat airport is also nearby (~97 km).
When to visit
Best time is November to April. During June–August, the park is closed because Brahmaputra floods the area.
Stay tips
Most hotels are in Kohora area. In peak season (Dec–Feb), hotels get full fast so booking early is important. Wear simple earth colour clothes during safari.
Kaziranga usually needs 1–2 days.
Tezpur – Cultural and Peaceful City
Tezpur is about 50 km from Kaziranga and around 180 km from Guwahati. It is known as the “City of Eternal Love”. It is a calm city with history, nature, and tea gardens.
Tezpur is one of the oldest cities in Assam. It also has mythological importance related to Usha and Aniruddha.
Places to visit in Tezpur
Agnigarh Hill

This is a small hill with garden and viewpoint. It is linked with the love story of Usha and Aniruddha. From top, you can see Brahmaputra river and Kolia Bhomora Setu bridge.
Chitralekha Udyan (Cole Park)

A simple park built during British time. It has greenery, walking paths, boating, and small rides. Good for relaxing evening.
Bamuni Hills

This place has old stone carvings from 9th–10th century. It is important for history lovers.
Mahabhairab Temple

Old Shiva temple which is still active. Local people visit regularly.
Nameri National Park (nearby)
Around 35 km away. Known for birdwatching and river rafting on Jia Bhoroli river. It is more quiet compared to Kaziranga.
Food in Tezpur
Tea is very famous here because of nearby tea gardens. Food is simple Assamese style like rice, fish curry, and smoked meat. Fresh air and calm environment makes it nice.
Tezpur is usually 1-day stop or overnight stay.
